Signal App Startup

2017

Goal

Use technology to help people keep in touch with their contacts

Description

A mobile app that uses artificial intelligence to remind users to reach out to contacts who they haven't talked to in a while. The reminders are based on how frequently a user normally talks with each contact, and notifies users when they fall out of their normal communication cycle.

Syncing contacts

The app syncs the user's contacts to get an idea of how frequently they speak with each contact

List of contacts that are highest priority to connect with

The main screen is a list of contacts that are highest priority to connect with (based on maintaining communication frequency)

Users receive notifications when they're falling out of their normal communication cycle with a contact or when a question was left unanswered

Key Challenge

What’s the best way to quickly convey the state of a relationship’s communication and encourage the user to actually reach out to their contact?

Solution

We chose to emphasize specific pieces of the information we had, such as the frequency of communication, how many days it has been since last contact, and the best time to reach out (based on when the specific contact most often responded to the user). I chose to simplify the actions by displaying the most common method of contact as the main action button and displaying the rest of the actions on a secondary level of hierarchy, rather than showing all text/call/video chat options with equal weight. This creates a clear primary action based on the user’s behavior pattern so the user has less decisions to make and is more likely to act on a reminder to reach out.

Mockup of screens from the app

I displayed the best time to contact the user right above the action items which also emphasize the best way to reach out (in this case, text) to increase the likelihood that the user will actually connect with the contact

When a user taps on a contact, they get a screen showing frequency of contact, last contact, and a prompt if contact is overdue
